The client who pays you every month is a different business

One retainer changes what you can plan, what you can refuse, and what a lender will believe. It also means raising the same invoice twelve times a year, which is exactly the kind of thing software should do.

Project work pays well and arrives unevenly. You have a month where three things land at once and a month where you are refreshing your inbox. The income is fine on average and average is not what you pay rent with.

One retainer client changes that arithmetic more than its size suggests. A fixed amount every month is not just money, it is the floor that lets you turn down the badly scoped project, wait for the better rate, and say no to the client who argues about every invoice.

The part nobody warns you about

A retainer is the same invoice, twelve times a year. The first three months you raise it promptly. By month seven it goes out four days late because you were shipping something, and by month ten you are not completely sure whether you sent September or only meant to.

This is not a discipline problem. It is a task with no trigger: nothing in your day announces that it is invoice day, and the client, reasonably, waits to be asked. Plenty of freelancers have quietly lost a month of a retainer this way and never noticed, because the only record that it should have gone out was in their head.

Set it once

In FendoMoney a retainer is a client, an amount and a schedule. The invoice is raised for you on the day it is due, with the same reference format and the same link your client already knows. You are told it went out. If the work changes, you change the retainer rather than remembering a new number every month.

What it is worth beyond the money

A year of regular monthly payments, recorded properly, is the closest thing a freelancer has to a payslip. It is what makes a landlord relax, what a lender actually reads, and what turns "I do contract work" into a sentence with evidence behind it.

That only works if the record exists. A retainer paid faithfully into a wallet for a year, with no invoices and no statement, is invisible to everybody except you.
